Nice! That must have been an incredible experience. Petra has definitely changed a lot since then. It’s still an amazing place to visit, though.

Spent two nights sleeping in a cave around the corner to the right from the Treasury building. I had been backpacking around the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and then Jordan) and came to Petra after living on the beach for a month in Aqaba. Over the three days I was there I only met a shepherd boy and his sheep. No tourists, except me, anywhere, I had Petra to myself. Did lots of walking around, hiking up to the tops of places. Wadi Musa was a bedouin camp, no hotels or other accommodations.
Second trip in August of 1968 as a participant in an “International Students’ Work Camp” in Ajlun, Jordan. Not much different from the 1966 trip, but only a day trip to Petra this time. I had a good, and very safe, backpacking experience in the Middle East and North Africa in the 1960’s.

One day is enough time to see all the main highlights of Petra, but I think 2 days is better so you can go at a more relaxed pace. I’d also spend one day at Wadi Rum.

How long do you suggest we stay to make sure we see everything?
