Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. Based on the description in that news article, it seems the Feb 2021 death was a fall from Moonlight Buttress on the West Rim Trail. It’s near Angels Landing, but not part of the normal trail, so that’s why I decided not to include it in the list.

I clicked your source link for the most recent death in 2021, and it seemingly referenced another falling death from Angel’s Landing just a month previously. Is there a reason why this second 2021 death was omitted?

Regarding the lottery system, I wonder if they considered using a timed- entry system instead, similar to timed entry system into Arches NP which began this April. It seems to work okay, and you can plan for it ahead of time. You pay $2 on recreation.gov. But having timed-entry at the Angel trailhead would require an employee be present at the trailhead to verify who is authorized to proceed up the trail. Just a thought.
